Sumol+Compal
into the future

Challenge

Futurista was asked to develop an imagination project for the future of Sumol+Compal (S+C), a Portuguese brand specialised in fruits and vegetables, which vision is to contribute to a healthier diet by providing convenient solutions of fruits and vegetables. The goal was to imagine future possibilities that allow S+C to better fulfil its vision.

The process

We organised a set of journaling activities with the target audience, in which they visually and verbally registered everything they ate and drank for a month. Based on that research we conducted in-depth interviews that allowed us to explore motivations, habits, frustrations and profiles.

Consumers needs, critical moments and identified trends were the matrix for the imagination of new concepts and products. The future imagination sessions gathered the client, consumers, health and nutrition specialists and some disruptive profiles.

We got to a very broad set of scenarios  — some quite futuristic, others more plausible or preferable — that showed possible futures for S+C, namely in the snacks market — a market with high growth potential following the trend to lighter meals. 

The concepts visualisation allowed us to understand its attractiveness and test its fit with S+C existing brands. We eliminated and selected concepts and established new product development priorities.

Product development took place, was well as several tests with consumers, that allowed us to test and slowly fine tune solutions regarding flavour, texture, doses, packaging, naming, visual imagery, etc.

The first product launch was Compal essencial à colher, a 100% fruit healthy snack, a convenient solution to consumers who are searching for a healthier lifestyle.
